Frequently asked questions

How does solar power really work?
Photovoltaic (PV) cells capture sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter then transforms the DC into alternating current (AC) electricity, which your electrical panel distributes to power your lights and appliances. In just one hour, the sunlight reaching Earth's surface provides enough energy to power the global economy for an entire year.
What are the advantages of moving to solar energy?
Solar power is one of the cleanest and most dependable forms of renewable energy available. It can be harnessed in various ways to power your home or business. By choosing solar, you gain control over your electricity supply, and the cost of solar-generated electricity is more affordable than what you typically pay from the grid.
Can Solar power all my household appliances (at the same time?)
Your current electricity needs are crucial in determining the best solution, which is where we excel. We ensure that our recommended solution meets your consumption profile and generates more power than required. Additionally, our Intelligent Energy Management platform helps you maximize your investment by optimizing energy use.
Can Solar really power my business for the entire 8hr day (Do I have to worry about my daily usage?)
Solar generation typically peaks around midday when the sun is at its highest. Through our value engineering process, we aim to match your daytime energy needs as closely as possible with solar output. Our Intelligent Energy Management platform helps align your consumption profile with the solar generation profile. Additionally, incorporating storage solutions (batteries) ensures that we can meet your energy needs even when solar generation is low.
Does solar power work when the weather is overcast (and no visible sun?)
Solar power production decreases during overcast conditions, which is why we implement grid-tied solutions to ensure you have access to the grid when solar generation is insufficient. Our systems are designed to prioritize solar power before drawing from the grid. In situations where the grid is unavailable, we offer hybrid solutions that connect your plant to a diesel generator for backup. Additionally, storage solutions (batteries) are crucial for maintaining a consistent electricity supply.
Will I have power at night, after the sun goes down (and for how long?)
If we implement storage (batteries), you will have power at night. How long all depends on the size of the storage solution we implement. All our solutions are value engineered around your consumption profile and linked to how independent you want to be. We can make you 100% independent – therefore, move you off grid.
Are batteries and inverters a standard for solar installations?
Inverters are standard components in solar systems, but storage (batteries) is typically added if you wish to use energy outside of solar hours or aim to move off-grid. The business case for storage is becoming increasingly compelling, and we are seeing more scenarios where incorporating storage from the start is financially beneficial.
Do solar installations interfere with my current power lines/switches?
There is no interference with your existing setup. We ensure that you receive a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) upon completion of the installation. However, this is contingent on having a CoC for your existing setup before we begin the work.
Do the installations have visible cabling, and where does it sit?
All cabling is secured in trunking and will not affect the aesthetics of your building.
How much will I really save from changing over to Solar, and how?
The cost of solar power depends on your consumption profile and the available space for installing solar panels. Generally, solar power has become cost-competitive with grid electricity, often resulting in lower costs per kWh. In our experience, we've observed savings ranging from 5% to 50% across our portfolio of projects.
How will installing solar affect productivity in my business?
The addition of solar power will not impact productivity, as it serves as an alternative energy source to your current electricity supply, whether from the grid or a generator. We will, however, work to optimize the use of solar electricity to maximize your cost savings.
Do I need batteries for a business (I imagine these would be many)?
The need for storage (batteries) depends on your current electricity supply and your desired level of independence from the grid. In Africa, we’re seeing a growing trend towards incorporating storage in solar solutions due to its increasingly cost-effective technology. Advances in storage technology are making it a viable option for many implementations.
How reliable is Solar really (production output)?
Solar generation is highly reliable, and in most cases, we observe better performance than initially predicted. During the design phase, we use advanced tools to accurately forecast generation. Post-installation, our sophisticated monitoring systems track performance against these forecasts, with automatic alerts generated if there are any discrepancies. We are so confident in solar’s reliability that we invest our own capital into the plants we finance. Additionally, we partner with top reinsurance providers to cover any potential loss of generation during the contract period. Solar is increasingly becoming a zero-risk choice.
